In a tragic event, 10 people have been killed and at least 10 injured in a mass shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park, east of Los Angeles. The shooting occurred late on Saturday, January 21, 2023, following a Lunar New Year celebration that attracted thousands of people.
The death toll has risen to 10 from the earlier report which said 9 people were killed.
According to Sergeant Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting took place at a business on Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park. Monterey Park is a city of around 60,000 people, with a large Asian population, located about 16km (10 miles) from downtown Los Angeles.
Los Angeles City Controller, Kenneth Mejia, expressed his condolences for the victims and their families in a tweet, “Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city, Monterey Park, where a mass shooting just occurred. Monterey Park is home to one of the largest Asian communities in Los Angeles County and many were out celebrating the Lunar New Year.”

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Dept Information Bureau (SIB) Update, the shooting was reported at approximately 10:22 PM, in the 100 block of W. Garvey Ave., Monterey Park. The victims include nine deceased, and the suspect is described as a male. Homicide Bureau – Lieutenant Patricia Thomas is investigating the case.
The streets around the shooting site were cordoned off by the police and footage posted on social media showed deserted streets guarded by police cars.
