Apple unveils iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

Apple has launched the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, featuring two sizes, 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, and a sophisticated design with impressive camera upgrades and new safety capabilities. Both models include the A15 Bionic chip with a 5-core GPU, which offers impressive performance and efficiency, and has been designed with privacy and security in mind. The phones introduce features such as Crash Detection, a first in the industry, as well as 5G connectivity, super-fast charging and industry-leading durability features. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be available in midnight, blue, starlight, purple and (PRODUCT)RED finishes.

The new phones feature a sleek aerospace-grade aluminium design and come in the popular 6.1-inch size and a new 6.7-inch size. The iPhone 14 Plus boasts the best battery life ever in an iPhone and both models have an updated internal design for better thermal performance, as well as Super Retina XDR displays with OLED technology that support 1200 nits of peak HDR brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and Dolby Vision. The phones also have Ceramic Shield front covers, which are tougher than any other smartphone glass, and are water and dust resistant.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus introduce a new standard for photo and video capture with a new 12MP main camera featuring a larger sensor and larger pixels, a new front TrueDepth camera, the Ultra Wide camera to capture more of a scene, and Photonic Engine for a giant leap in low-light performance. The Photonic Engine improves mid- to low-light performance for photos across all cameras, including a 2x improvement on the Ultra Wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth camera, and a 2.5x improvement on the new main camera.

Other camera upgrades and features include a new main camera with a larger ƒ/1.5 aperture and 1.9 µm pixels, which enables photo and video improvements in all lighting scenarios, as well as a new front TrueDepth camera with Night mode and HDR video recording. The Ultra Wide camera has a new ƒ/2.4 aperture and a 120-degree field of view for capturing more of a scene, and the main camera has a new ProRAW format that combines the benefits of Apple’s computational photography with the flexibility of a RAW format.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus also introduce a new ProRes video format that captures more detail and reduces file sizes, as well as a new Dolby Vision HDR recording that captures and plays back HDR video in the highest quality. The phones also have an Apple-designed ISP that improves low-light performance, reduces noise and enables more accurate colour mapping.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus run on the iOS 16 operating system, which includes new features such as App Library, which organizes apps into one easy-to-navigate view, and Picture in Picture mode, which allows users to watch a video or take a FaceTime call while using other apps. The operating system also includes a new translation app that translates conversations in real time and a new privacy feature that allows users to see which apps are tracking their location.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage options, and can be pre-ordered from 5 a.m. PDT on Friday, September 9.
