Eight people were injured in a shooting at a Martin Luther King Jr Day event in Fort Pierce, Florida, on Monday evening.
The shooting took place at Ilous Ellis Park during an MLK Car Show and Family Fun Day, which was attended by over 1,000 people. According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, all the victims were adults and one of them is in critical condition. Four other individuals, including a child, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The police stated that there was a disagreement between two parties, which resulted in gun violence. Martin Luther King Jr Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honours the legacy and life of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
This shooting occurred as mass shootings have been reported in the country, with 648 mass shootings reported in the country last year according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Last year President Joe Biden signed the first major federal gun reform in three decades, which aimed to strengthen background checks, remove firearms from individuals considered to be a threat, and close a loophole that allowed some people accused of domestic abuse to own guns.
