Fatal Crash Investigation: 6600 Southwest Freeway

Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 6600 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (March 2).

The identity of the deceased female, 9, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Richards and Officer D. Thompson reported:

The child was a passenger in a black Nissan Rogue traveling northbound on the freeway. The Rogue was struck from behind by a Kia Soul, also traveling northbound on the freeway. The child was transported to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced her deceased.

Three persons inside the Kia were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, later identified as Jefry Jose Canaca Alvarenga, 28, was determined to be intoxicated and subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated with child under 15 in the 182nd State District Court.

The investigation is continuing.
