The Republican legislators are investigating the withdrawal of American military forces from Afghanistan which caused the takeover of the Taliban and thousands of people fleeing to the Kabul airport.
The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, said the Biden administration has denied to provide a number of documents including intelligence assessments and communications with the Taliban and Afghan government.
“It is absurd and disgraceful that the Biden administration has repeatedly denied our longstanding oversight requests and continues to withhold information related to the withdrawal”.
‘It is imperative that the State Department provide complete responses to these longstanding requests, and the committee will not tolerate continued delay,’ he wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Tony Blinken.
“In the event of continued noncompliance, the Committee will use the authorities available to it to enforce these requests as necessary, including through a compulsory process,” McCaul said in a statement.
The withdrawal from Afghanistan was one of the most difficult moments of President Joe Biden’s first year in office.
The Republican Party, now holding the majority in the House, has the ability to use subpoenas as part of their investigations.
The American evacuation from Afghanistan was marked by chaos and tragedy, as 13 U.S. Marines and more than 100 Afghans lost their lives when a bomb exploded at the Kabul Airport.
