Houston police are investigating the death of a male suspect following an incident at 5400 East Freeway (East Interstate Highway 10) service road about 8:40 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 26).
The identity of the suspect, 44, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives A. Henderson and J. Windham reported:
HPD patrol officers observed a road rage incident involving two persons driving separate vehicles near a gas station at the above address. Officers attempted to obtain information and identification of the male driver, believed to be the aggressor, but he refused to provide information. When officers attempted to detain the male, he resisted and fled on foot from officers toward the main lanes of the East Freeway.
Officers gave repeated verbal commands to the suspect to stop, but he refused and continued to flee. The suspect jumped over the freeway barrier, entered the main lanes and began to run across the freeway. He was then struck by a blue Nissan pickup truck. The driver of the Nissan stopped and remained at the scene. Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the suspect deceased.
As is customary when a suspect dies in the presence of HPD officers, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
